Case 1 (Waku-waku)

Case Study

Turning excitement and sensibility into visual insights

In this project, we developed a real-time brainwave analysis technology that quantifies and visualizes human excitement. By leveraging neuroscientific methods, this system enables the objective evaluation of unconscious emotions, capturing authentic reactions that traditional questionnaires and interviews often miss.

Background, Issues, and Objectives

In product development and advertising evaluation, it is essential to accurately understand consumers’ emotions and reactions. However, conventional methods often rely on subjective opinions, making it difficult to capture genuine emotional responses.
This project aims to quantitatively evaluate unconscious emotions by directly measuring brain activity and to apply these insights to the development of products and services.

Approach and Methodology

Using EEG devices, we measure participants’ brain activity in real time and evaluate their emotions based on three axes: Valence (pleasant–unpleasant), Arousal (level of excitement), and Expectation (sense of anticipation).
This model makes it possible to quantify and visualize the feeling of “waku waku”, emotional excitement.
It also takes individual personality traits into account, classifying participants into three personality types to optimize the evaluation model for each.

Implementation Flow and Roadmap

1. Experiment Design: Determine the evaluation target (e.g., product, advertisement, video, etc.) and establish the experimental protocol.
2. Data Collection: Equip participants with EEG devices and present the evaluation targets while collecting brainwave data.
3. Data Analysis: Analyze the collected EEG data and quantify the level of “waku waku” (excitement) based on a three-axis emotional model.
4. Visualization of Results: Display the analysis results visually through graphs or interface dashboards.
5. Feedback: Provide improvement proposals for products or services based on the obtained results.

Use Cases
  • Product Development: Check how people really feel about new product ideas and designs.

  • Advertising & Marketing: See how much emotion your ads, videos, or slogans create.

  • Entertainment: Find out how audiences react to movies, games, or other content.

  • Healthcare & Wellness: Understand the feelings of elderly people or dementia patients to improve care.

  • Education: Measure students’ interest and attention to make learning more fun and effective.
